Charles Street Square
City of Parramatta Council is preparing concept designs to transform Charles Street Square at Parramatta Quay, one of a number of planned foreshore improvement projects that will strengthen the connection between our city and its river.
The project will bring to life Charles Street Square, attract more visitors to the Parramatta Quay precinct, and create a memorable experience at one of the major gateways to our city.
The Charles Street Square project will resolve some of the issues identified through earlier stakeholder and community engagement. This improved urban design will provide a more attractive, accessible and useable public space. The Charles Street Square project will also complement the NSW Government’s upgrade of the ferry wharf to create a vibrant meeting place for visitors and our community.
- March - April 2019 - Site investigations, stakeholder consultations and concept development
- Mid 2019 - Stakeholder and community engagement and public exhibition of concept designs
- Early 2020 - Design approvals and tender
- Mid 2020 - 2021 Construction.

As part of early environmental investigation works to support the transformation of Charles Street Square, a geotechnical survey will be undertaken by Council’s specialist consultants commencing Tuesday 21 May 2019.
Work will take place between 7am-5pm, weekdays (Monday to Friday only). Subject to weather and site conditions, work is expected to be completed within two days.
Geotechnical works program
This geotechnical work will involve drilling small boreholes (around 10cm in diameter), to a depth of up to six metres in 14 locations across the site. Testing will require the use of a range of equipment including a ute-mounted auger.
For safety, an area around each borehole will be closed to the public, with staff directing pedestrians around the test sites as required. Once the borehole has been reinstated, capped and the area certified for safe use, the test site will be reopened.
