Active Citizenship

Active Citizenship Poster, National Conference 6-8 November 2019 in Parramatta

National Conference - REGISTRATIONS OPEN
Wednesday 6 – Friday 8 November, 2019, Parramatta (2.5 Days)

The City of Parramatta Council is hosting a national conference designed to share and progress effective approaches to enabling and building active citizenship and community-led action.

Active citizenship - people acting deliberately to contribute to the civic life of their communities and create positive change - is crucial in developing and sustaining healthy societies and healthy democracies. Communities are now also facing complex social, economic and environmental issues, and many people have a desire to participate in civic action to address them.

Active citizenship is a combination of knowledge, attitude, skills and actions, and requires a sense of personal and collective agency in being an effective citizen whose civic actions count and can achieve change. Developing a sense of agency is the result of a number of factors, including education, government and social structures, and opportunities to test and grow civic-minded actions.

Civic action is not limited to the political sphere of life, and people can be active to create positive change as social actors, economic actors and cultural actors, to align with the skill sets and interests of individuals. While there are several ways people can take part in creating positive change, people often need support to strengthen the knowledge, skills and confidence required to identify solutions and take action.

This conference is for people and organisations involved in designing, delivering, researching or funding strategies that enhance the capacity of people for civic engagement and creating positive change in the community.

The program aims to ensure that participants can learn from effective approaches undertaken in different contexts, and from the lessons learned by those implementing them. Presentations, guest speakers and workshops address one of three themes: First Nations, Social Investment/Social Enterprise, and General.
